How to Balance Summer Classes With Preseason Training

July 6, 2026

Summer classes plus preseason training is one of the hardest combinations in college athletics. You are waking up early for conditioning, spending afternoons in the classroom, and trying to recover in between. It is a real test of discipline. Most athletes fail it because they do not plan ahead.

The solution is a fixed schedule. Treat your class time like practice time. Do not skip. Do not push readings to the weekend. Block out two hours every morning before training for coursework. That is non-negotiable. After training, your brain is fried and your body is exhausted. Do the academic work before soccer, not after.

Communicate with your professors early. Tell them you are an athlete and ask about flexibility for assignment deadlines during travel. Most will work with you if you ask before there is a problem. Do not wait until you are drowning. And do not forget sleep. Eight hours minimum. You cannot handle double days on six hours of rest.
