Redshirt Year: How to Use It Right
July 7, 2026
A lot of players hear "redshirt" and think it means they are being pushed aside. That is the wrong way to see it. A redshirt year gives you something most college athletes never get: a full season to develop without the pressure of game day performance. Used well, it sets you up to be a better player for the next four years.
Here is what to do with it. Focus on your body. Redshirt years are the best time to add strength, fix your diet, and build a sleep routine that actually works. You have time to go to every lift, every training session, and every film review without worrying about legs being tired for a game. You also get a head start on academics. Knock out your hardest classes now so your schedule is lighter when you are traveling for games. And build relationships with the coaching staff. Show them every day that you are coachable. When your time comes, they will already trust you.
Treat the redshirt year like a job interview that lasts nine months. Do not waste it.
