The Recruiting Timeline: When to Actually Start Contacting College Coaches
April 2026
I had a parent call me last week. Panicked. Her daughter is a 2028 grad, plays at a top club, good grades. She had sent 40-plus emails to coaches. Zero replies. She asked, "Is she not good enough?"
The answer was not about talent. It was about timing. She was emailing in late May of junior year. Most college rosters for 2028 are identified by November of junior year. By spring, coaches are watching players they already know. She was running the right play. six months too late.
Here is the actual timeline that works. Freshman year: build your target list, start taking core courses seriously, create an NCAA Eligibility Center account. Sophomore year: research programs deeply, watch game film, study rosters, create your highlight reel. Junior year August through October: first contact, send emails with your reel, attend ID camps at target schools. Junior year December through February: follow-ups with updated film, campus visits, coach calls. Junior year March through May: narrow your list. Senior year: official visits and signing.
Most families don't know this timeline exists. So they start in junior year and wonder why doors are closed. The colleges aren't the problem. The timing is.
