Club Decisions

Is It Time to Switch Clubs?

August 2025

Every season, families and athletes ask the same question. Should we stay with this club, or is it time to move on? It is not always a clear answer. Sometimes there is tension. Maybe the coach stops giving feedback. Maybe your child is benched for long stretches with no explanation. Other times it is more subtle. A lack of motivation. No real progress. A feeling that the season is just something to survive, not something to grow through.

Changing clubs is not a decision to take lightly. Too many moves can make coaches question your reliability. But staying too long in the wrong place can hold your child back. The key is knowing how to spot the signs and handle the switch the right way.

Here are five questions to ask before making the call:

One: Is your child still developing? If the training environment pushes them to get better every session, stay. If they've plateaued and the coaching isn't addressing it, that's a red flag.

Two: Is the coaching relationship healthy? Coaches who communicate, give honest feedback, and invest in your child's growth are worth staying for. Coaches who ignore, criticize without teaching, or play favorites are not.

Three: Is the team level right? Your child should be challenged but not overwhelmed. If they're the best player on a weak team or struggling to keep up on a strong one, the balance is off.

Four: Is the travel and time commitment sustainable? If the drive, cost, and schedule are burning the family out, it doesn't matter how good the club is. Burned-out families lead to burned-out athletes.

Five: What does your gut say? After you run through the logical questions, sit with it. If the thought of another season feels heavy instead of exciting, that's worth listening to.
