Training for the Decade That Matters Most
November 2025
After playing soccer professionally for more than ten years, I've learned something about time. It moves faster than we think, but it rewards those who use it wisely. Longevity in sport is not luck. It is built through thousands of small, ordinary choices that shape the extraordinary. Every stretch after practice, every mindful meal, every night of proper rest was an investment.
I was training for the future before I even realized it. Staying healthy, consistent, and competitive meant sacrificing short-term comfort for long-term stability. And even though I didn't have the language for it back then, what I was really building was what experts call healthspan. the number of high-quality years you can perform at your best.
The teenage years are the most critical window for building these habits. The neural pathways for complex skills, the movement patterns that prevent injury, and the psychological resilience that keeps you in the game are all wired during this period. The habits you build now compound like interest. Small, smart investments now yield massive returns by your twenties. The question isn't whether you're training hard enough. It's whether you're training for the decade ahead, not just this weekend's game.
