The Transfer Portal Trap: When Loyalty Matters and When It is Time to Go

December 2025

The world of youth soccer has changed quickly. The transfer portal at the college level has created more movement than ever, and families sometimes feel that switching clubs is the only way to keep up. At the same time, others worry that moving too often sends the wrong message. Both fears are real.

There is a myth many players fall into. They believe that joining a higher badge or bigger league will immediately unlock opportunities. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. I have seen situations where a move helps a player grow, and I have also seen situations where a player moves to a bigger club and sits on the bench for two seasons. The badge on the chest doesn't guarantee playing time. Development happens on the field, not on a roster page.

Loyalty matters in this process. Not blind loyalty where you stay in a bad situation out of fear. But thoughtful loyalty. the kind that says, "I committed to this team and I will give it everything before I decide to leave." Coaches notice players who honor their commitments. They also notice players who jump ship the first time things get hard. The question isn't whether to move. It's whether the move actually serves your development. Not every transfer is an upgrade. Sometimes the best move is staying put and growing where you are.
