How to Make a Highlight Reel That Coaches Actually Watch

July 5, 2026

College coaches decide whether to keep watching in the first five seconds. If your reel starts with a logo animation, slow-motion warmups, or a music intro, they click away. They are looking for soccer, not a movie trailer. Your reel needs to show them what kind of player you are immediately.

The best format is simple. First clip shows your best quality as a player. If you are a center back, show a dominant defensive action. If you are a winger, show a one-v-one and a cross. Do not bury your best moment in the middle of the reel. Lead with it. Keep the entire reel under 90 seconds. Three to five minutes is too long. Coaches will not watch it.

Use game footage only. No training clips, no skills show. Coaches want to see you making decisions in a real game environment. Label each clip with the competition level and your jersey number. And always include the opponent's jersey color in the frame so they can distinguish your player from the opposition.
