How to Win a Position Battle in Preseason
July 5, 2026
Preseason position battles are not won in August. They are won in June and July. The player who shows up fit, technical, and mentally sharp on day one has a massive advantage over someone who needs two weeks to catch up. Coaches notice who is ready immediately and who is still finding their rhythm.
Focus on three things during the weeks before preseason. First, your fitness baseline. You should be able to complete a full training session at match intensity without falling off. Second, your first touch and passing under pressure. The technical work done alone with a wall pays off when the coach is watching. Third, your sleep and nutrition routine. Being in the right physical state every day gives you a compounding edge.
Beyond the physical, show that you are coachable. Be early to every session. Be the first to start the warmup. Communicate on the field. Players who make the coach's job easier get more chances. The players who win position battles are the ones who remove doubt. Every rep, every drill, every conversation. Leave no question that you belong.
